What is the future of mail and letter boxes in Germany: Consumers’ views on letters, advertising mail & items delivered to personal mailboxes
The Germans love letters and their personal mailboxes: This was confirmed again in what is now the fourth edition of the annual consumer survey Mailbox Monitor 2021 by Spectos. More than 2,000 participants of the Spectos market research panel answered the extensive questionnaire on the topics of mailboxes, delivery quality, communication behavior, promotional and direct mail, and sustainability.

Among the questions survey participants were asked to answer were questions such as:
- What are your favorite items to receive in your personal mailbox?
- How do you rate the quality of delivery (delivery time, integrity, reliability) of shipments delivered directly to your mailbox?
- Are you interested in a letter announcement by email for advance notice of mail (including the envelope photo)? If so, do you want to be informed in advance about the content of the shipment?
- What do you think about an opt-in for direct mail to your mailbox?
We’ve observed that while there is a noticeable shift toward digital communications, when it comes to information from banks, insurances and healthcare providers, the traditional letter is still the most valued means of communication for German consumers. There is a trend toward sustainability, but it remains to be seen how much consumers are willing to pay for a reduced carbon footprint.
